How Long It Actually Takes to Set Up a Company in the UAE in 2026

A free zone licence can be issued in under a week. That number tells you almost nothing about when you can invoice a client — because the licence is not the step that decides your timeline.

Every provider advertises the same number. A company in three days. A licence in 48 hours. The number is usually true, and it answers a question almost nobody actually has.

A licence does not open a bank account. It does not give you a visa. It does not make you a resident. The timeline that matters is the one that ends with money arriving from your first client — and the licence is one of the shortest steps in it.

What each stage actually takes

Free zone licence — 3 to 7 working days. Application and approval take one to two days, payment and generation another one to two, then the licence and share certificate are issued. This is the number you see in advertising.

Mainland licence — 7 to 15 working days. Three steps are added: trade name reservation (1–2 days), initial approval (1–2 days), and drafting and notarising the Memorandum of Association (2–3 days). The licence itself is then issued in 3–5 days.

Establishment card and visa quota — 3 to 5 working days. This is the step that allows your company to sponsor anyone at all. Nothing visa-related can start before it exists.

Entry permit to Emirates ID — 10 working days at best, 2 to 3 weeks in practice. The entry permit takes 2–3 days. The medical fitness test is 1–3 days. Emirates ID biometrics is 1–3 days. Visa stamping is 3–5 days. The physical card arrives 7–10 days later, or in about 24 hours on the Fawri urgent service.

Corporate bank account — 4 to 8 weeks. This is not a formality at the end. It is the longest stage by a wide margin.

Add it up honestly. Free zone with one visa: 3 to 5 weeks. Mainland with one visa: 4 to 6 weeks. A fully operational company with a working bank account: most often 2 to 3 months.

The part almost nobody plans for

Delays rarely come from the registration itself. They come from five places.

Document attestation. Apostille and consular legalisation outside the UAE take 3 to 10 days, and nothing moves until the documents land. This has to start before you file, not after.

Trade name rejection. Names are refused for similarity to an existing company or for restricted words. Each rejection costs several days and a new approval cycle.

Regulated activities. Healthcare, finance and education need approvals from the relevant authority on top of the standard package. These are measured in weeks, not days.

Medical test availability. September and January are peak months. Appointment slots routinely sit a week out, and the entry permit is only valid for 60 days.

Health insurance. A residence visa cannot be stamped without it. It surfaces at the last moment more often than it should, usually on the day everything else is ready.

The bank sets your timeline, not the licence

What you can run in parallel

Most published timelines assume everything happens in sequence. It does not have to.

Document attestation can begin weeks before registration — the documents do not care whether the company exists yet. The bank pack (business plan, contracts, source of funds, shareholder profiles) can be assembled while the visa is processing. Health insurance can be arranged the day the entry permit is issued rather than the day stamping is due.

Done properly, running these in parallel removes 2 to 3 weeks from the total.

The honest summary

  1. Count from your first client payment, not from the licence. A realistic benchmark is 8 to 10 weeks from decision to full operation.
  2. The bank is the critical path. Everything else can be compressed; the bank largely cannot. Start preparing that file on day one.
  3. Attestation is the most common avoidable delay. It is entirely front-loadable and almost always left late.
  4. Mainland costs you about a week more than a free zone in pure processing time — which is rarely the deciding factor between them.
